Winter Biking
The Ice Road Ride
Saturdays, 9:30 am
Meet at Big Water Coffee, Bayfield
Bayfield to Madeline Island Weekly Ice Road Ride.
The Ice Road Ride is a free no-drop ride hosted by the North Coast Cycling Association every Saturday morning following the ice road from Bayfield WI to Madeline Island. The ice road is typically open each year between about mid-January to late March or early April. No preregistration is needed for the Ice Road Ride and visitors are welcome. Riders will meet at 9:30am at the Big Water Cafe (117 Rittenhouse Ave) in Bayfield where we can stoke up on coffee, hot chocolate, and pastries. We hit the ice at 10am and ride the 2.1 mile ice road to the town of LaPointe on Madeline Island. Depending on weather conditions and the mood of the riders we may simply ride back to the mainland (rarely), or ride some of the gently rolling roads on the island, possibly stopping at attractions such as the Big Bay State Park. Before heading back to Bayfield, the group will stop at the Beach Club (817 Main St.) near the ferry dock in LaPointe. The Beach Club opens at 11am and serves hot beverages, soft drinks, beer, and a full menu of high calorie foods. It is a great pit stop and warming station before the 2.1 mile return ice road ride to Bayfield. Riders who drop out of the ride can wait for the group at the Beach Club where all riders will be picked up for the ride back to Bayfield.
Riders are asked to submit their email or contact number to info@northcoastcycling.com so they can be notified of any cancellations. Rides will be cancelled in the event of dangerous conditions such as wind chills of -30F or colder, low visibility due to snow or fog, or dangerously strong winds.
